F1 Results Today: Mercedes engines roar as Oscar Piastri thrills home crowd

All the times from FP1 and FP2 at the Australian Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri led the timing sheets at the end of the first day's running of the 2026 season, setting the fastest time of the day in the second session of free practice in Melbourne.

The Australian had struggled somewhat for pace in FP1, as had the Mercedes pair of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, but all three drivers seemed to have a little more oomph in their Mercedes engines for the second hour of running.

Piastri went fastest ahead of Antonelli and Russell to complete a Mercedes-powered top three at the end of the session, flipping the board after an FP1 which saw the Ferraris and Red Bulls dominate.

The Ferraris slotted into fourth and fifth in FP2, and Max Verstappen followed in sixth after some technical issues with his car cost him nearly half the session.

Fernando Alonso finally got out on track after being forced out of FP1 with a power unit issue, although he and team-mate Lance Stroll – whose session ended early with another issue – were some significant way behind the rest of the teams on track.
