Cup Series champ slams NASCAR decisions as fans blame jealousy

Brad Keselowski watches the action at the 2024 Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway

A NASCAR Cup Series star and former champion has hit out at a decision made by the sport in recent years.

Brad Keselowski is staring down the barrel of his third winless season in his last four as his career at the pinnacle of the sport draws to a close, but he's still remained outspoken on what he sees as the big issues facing NASCAR.

Writing on Twitter this Thursday, the 41-year-old bemoaned the number of road courses now used in the Cup Series, which has been rising since the Charlotte Roval was added in 2018.

That number now stands at six in 2025, with Mexico City added to the schedule for the first time and the Chicago Street Race on the calendar for the third (and possibly last) time.

Keselowski: Too many road courses in NASCAR

Responding to long-time motorsport journalist Pete Pistone on social media after the latter pointed out that fans were calling for the number of road courses to increase less than a decade ago – a call NASCAR listened to – Keselowski claimed that the calendar had moved too much, too fast.

"We went from 2 to 6 road course races, possibly 7 next year," he wrote. "NASCAR was successfully built as a primarily oval racing series. IMSA was built as the primary road course series in North America. IMSA will always do road racing better than NASCAR and that’s ok.

"Yes, TOO many road courses in NASCAR."

While some fans responded to Keselowski's statements with some skepticism, pointing out his 51 Cup Series races on road courses without a single win (and run of 18 without a single top-ten finish), he hit back at that notion.

"Nothing to do with my performance," he said. "If anything, it’s good for my ownership stake in RFK to run road courses as we’ve had 2 of the best teams with 6&60 this season on road courses."

Keselowski isn't the only NASCAR veteran questioning the prevalence of road courses in the Cup Series in the 2020s, although it's worth noting that this has only become a hot-button issue since a driver from outside NASCAR arrived in the sport full-time and started wiping the floor with the sport's more established drivers on any circuit that has right-hand corners.
