Katherine Legge made it through the prospect of elimination for Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicago.

The British driver, featuring in Cup Series races for the first time this year, was one of five Open entry drivers competing for just four places in the race during qualifying.

Truck Series star Corey Heim damaged a toe-link on his car when he hit the wall during qualifying, preventing the part-time Cup Series entrant for 23XI Racing from fulfilling his potential.

Legge also outpaced full-time Cup Series drivers Erik Jones, Cody Ware, Ty Dillon and Bubba Wallace among those who set lap times, with all four Hendrick Motorsports cars and Denny Hamlin all also starting behind her after damaging their cars.

Legge jokes broadcast highlighted her mistakes

Legge's Saturday wasn't entirely smooth sailing, hitting a tyre barrier with her right rear in qualifying before her left front made friends with the wall in qualifying, but she'll be starting her second Cup Series road race of the year nonetheless.

Speaking on the TNT broadcast after her run, she said: "I was thinking, way to go showing all my minor indiscretions there. I tried my best to mess that qualifying up, honestly.

"It was a lot of pressure to come in with only 20 minutes of practice on a street course where there is no room for error (and) try to put it in the show. I actually feel pretty good about it now.

"We would have been a lot faster had I not kept nicking the walls. I've given my crew a lot of work to do. Sorry guys! But I just had to keep pushing and put it in the show, which we did so I'm very proud of them. I'm very much looking forward to tomorrow and a little bit less stress."
