A NASCAR Cup Series team have announced that all of their cars will start Sunday's race from the back of the field.

Hendrick Motorsports had a nightmare Saturday at the Chicago Street Race, with Chase Elliott and William Byron failing to even set a time in qualifying after hitting the wall in practice.

Now the team has announced that Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman will join them in starting from the back, with all four cars needing to be repaired on Saturday evening.

The quartet will be joined at the back by Denny Hamlin, who didn't even get a single pace lap in during practice before his car gave out on him, dumping oil and smoking.

Byron calls himself an idiot after crash

Byron spoke after breaking his left-rear toe-link in practice, saying: "I'm an idiot. I just took a lot through there and (had) a lot of speed. I was just getting my tires cleaned back off from leaving pit road.

"I had just pitted, so my tires were probably just coming up to temp again. I took it easy the first half of the lap and I was starting to push, being close to the alternate start/finish (line) and just lost traction."

Shane van Gisbergen will start the race from pole after dominating qualifying, with Michael McDowell and Carson Hocevar rounding out the top three.

Van Gisbergen took a great victory in Saturday's Xfinity Series race, passing Connor Zilisch after a late restart having dropped down the field in Stage 2 thanks to a tactical mistake.
