NASCAR driver gives brutal assessment of own quality after 'carnage' of early career

NASCAR rookie Katherine Legge has opened up on the 'carnage' of her opening races in the series.

The British driver has entered the last five Xfinity Series races as she looks to gain experience in stock car racing, although she failed to qualify last time out in Nashville, and will be back in the Cup Series this weekend in Mexico City.

Legge's Cup Series debut came at Phoenix back in early March, a race which saw her spin early before wrecking when she spun out in front of Daniel Suarez, who was coming to lap her.

The open-wheel and sports car veteran has ended up tangled with other cars in all of her Xfinity starts this year, but insisted that the only wreck she takes responsibility was that Cup Series debut at Phoenix.

Legge: I thought I was better than I am

Speaking to NASCAR.com ahead of her Cup Series return this weekend, Legge said: “It’s been good, bad and indifferent. I have been taken out in every race in some form or another. The only one that I think was down to me was Phoenix, which started it all. After that, it’s been a lot of carnage.”

The Brit is going to be racing more in the Cup Series in the second half of this season, with starts at the Chicago Street Race, Sonoma Raceway, Watkins Glen International and Richmond Raceway coming up after Mexico City.

Eagle-eyed readers will notice that all of those races barring Richmond are street or road tracks, where Legge is more experienced, while she builds up her stock car oval experience in the Xfinity Series.

Legge did have one further admission about her foray into NASCAR, saying: “I thought that I was a lot better than I am. I have no doubt that I’ll get there. But how quickly? I thought I would drive the car a couple of times and then be up at the sharp end, but it’s taking a little longer than I anticipated.”
