Ferrari explain reason behind double Red Bull protest

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has explained the reasoning behind the double protest against Red Bull duo Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen.

Perez and Verstappen finished first and third at the end of a chaotic race around the streets of the principality but both could now be demoted.

Ferrari has protested the two drivers for failing to stay to the right of the yellow line at the pit exit.

If the stewards uphold the protest, Perez and Verstappen will be hit with five-second time penalties and will fall to third and fourth, while Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc will be promoted to a one-two.

Asked to clarify the reasoning behind the protests, Binotto said: "We have made the protests because we believe it is right to seek clarification.

"It is not protesting Red Bull itself but seeking a clarification on a matter that's obvious and clear.

"We believe both Red Bulls were on the yellow line exiting the pit lane and in the past it has always been penalised with a five-second penalty.

"If you read the race director notes, written after Turkey 2020 to avoid any misunderstanding, you need to stay to the right of the yellow line.

"Just to avoid confusion on the wording, [it is not] crossing, being on the yellow line. You need to stay right of the yellow line and for us, this was not the case at all.

"It is an obvious decision, which I understand is not for them, and that's the purpose of the protest."
