Domenicali - "We feel safe" as F1 continues in Saudi Arabia despite terrorist attack
F1 has chosen to continue with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix despite a terrorist attack on a nearby oil refinery in Jeddah.
Drivers and teams met with F1 and the FIA ahead of the second practice session to be updated on the latest information regarding an explosion and fire 11 kilometres from the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
The Houthi rebel group, which controls a significant part of northern Yemeni territory, has since claimed responsibility, according to AP.
In the meeting called by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, he informed personnel the race weekend is to continue as planned and confirmed that security for the grand prix was a priority for the authorities.
After the meeting concluded, Domenicali reassured gathering media as he said: "We feel safe."
A statement from the Saudi Motorsport Company added: "We are aware of the attack on the Aramco distribution station in Jeddah this afternoon and remain in direct contact with the Saudi security authorities, as well as F1 and the FIA to ensure all necessary security and safety measures continue to be implemented to guarantee the safety of all visitors to the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as well as all drivers, teams and stakeholders.
"The race weekend schedule will continue as planned.
"The safety and security of all our guests continues to be our main priority and we look forward to welcoming fans for a weekend of premium racing and entertainment."
As further information becomes available, Domenicali is scheduled to hold a further meeting with team principals after FP2.
As a result of the meeting, FP2 was delayed by 15 minutes.
