Hamilton slates Pirelli over tyres 'worse than last year'

Lewis Hamilton has criticised Pirelli for supplying tyres that are "worse this year" ahead of the F1 season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Mercedes endured a mixed pre-season test as the team battled to get to grips with its radical new 'disappearing sidepod' concept.

Despite catching the eye with its design, the Silver Arrows failed to make an impact on the timesheets compared to rivals Red Bull and Haas with Hamilton's best effort across the three days putting his just 16th overall.

Mercedes has previously labelled its 2021 car a "diva" and asked if this was again an appropriate description, Hamilton explained: "It’s not necessarily a word I would potentially use.

"I think 2022’s car regulations have meant, for everyone with everyone sliding around, we all seem to have less grip than before, the tyres are worse this year.

“On the long runs, it’s physically a lot easier for me, what I’ve found here. The positives so far, following another car looks a little bit better which is hopefully the right direction."

Despite his criticism of Pirelli, the seven-time champion backed the tyre manufacturer to deliver an improved product during the season.

“I hope we can get some better tyres at some stage, or maybe they’ll work better in places where it’s not so hot," he added.

"I’m sure the progress through the year will get to that place.”
