F1 teams no longer 'moaning and groaning' about 2022 rules
F1 managing director, motorsports Ross Brawn has suggested teams are no longer 'moaning and groaning' about the new regulations for this year despite initial trepidation.
The sport introduces a new breed of car for the upcoming season with a long-term plan to provide more exciting racing with cars that can follow more closely to each other due to reprofiled aerodynamics.
The rules seemingly took a lot of engineering freedom away from teams but after unveiling a dummy car at Silverstone last year, it soon became apparent teams would develop varying design solutions for the new campaign.
Teams will, however, still be largely restricted given the lack of aerodynamic structures on the top face of the cars, whilst the budget cap will also restrict development.
Asked in an interview with the New York Times whether he was itching to see the new machinery unveiled, former Benetton, Ferrari, Honda, Brawn and Mercedes mastermind, Brawn, replied: "I'm fascinated.
"When we started, when the teams first saw the regulations, there were all moans and groans about the fact we'd taken so much scope away from them.
"But as they explored it, they realised there was still plenty of potential. I always took the approach when I was a technical director that I had to work within the regulations that were there.
"Given that was the same regulations for everyone, whoever did the best job of the regulations that were in front of you was the one who would succeed."
