Ricciardo seethes at French GP penalty: 'Someone had to create entertainment'

Daniel Ricciardo made his displeasure clear after two penalties booted him from the points at the French Grand Prix. Ricciardo had a total of 10 seconds added to his race time at Paul Ricard, having pulled off late-race overtakes on Lando Norris and Kimi Raikkonen by exceeding track limits.

Norris suffered late mechanical issues from seventh, allowing Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Nico Hulkenberg to close up behind.

Eventually the McLaren man ended up behind them all, although perhaps slightly unfairly as Ricciardo forced him wide after leaving the track at the chicane.

The Australian then went around Raikkonen on the straight, having once again put all four wheels over the white line, opening the door for a post-race sanction, which duly arrived.

Ricciardo dropped to 11th as a result, costing Renault points in their home race and his displeasure was made clear in a string of tweets, some of which were later deleted.

Discussing the incident before learning of his penalty, Ricciardo said: "I did all I could to stay on the track, but with this new surface as well, you can see there's a shiny line which is full of grip, anything off that is literally like marbles.

"I was trying to do my best to stay on. To be honest, for the team I really hope we keep the points, but for my side I'm glad I tried, I have no regrets whatever happens, because it's the last lap, it's a position, and it's never my style to sit back and be the conservative one in battle."
