Kubica determined to take 2019 race seat
Robert Kubica remains determined to secure a race seat in Formula 1 in 2019. Kubica has returned to F1 this year as Williams' test and reserve driver, returning to the sport after years recuperating from life-altering arm injuries sustained in a rally crash in 2011.
Kubica was overlooked by Williams in favour of Sergey Sirotkin for the 2018 season alongside Lance Stroll, although the pole has taken to the car in FP1 in Spain and Austria.
With a string of seats up and down the grid yet to be tied up for next season, Kubica retains hope of making his first grand prix outing since the 2010 Abu Dhabi event in 2019.
"My status and my position doesn't change honestly since the end of last year. Of course, now there will be a lot of talks although I'm staying away from them," Kubica said.
"My target will be to race next year but this hasn't changed since the end of last year - so we will see."
"It's not that because we are sitting here I am just targeting to be on the grid with Williams.
"My target is to be on the grid and we will see. Realistically speaking, there are not many teams I can end up with or talk with. There is no magic."
Kubica's willingness to seek a seat away from Williams could be seen as a sign that the Pole is concerned by their wretched season to date.
Although the Grove squad are bottom of the constructors' standings and have scored points in just one race this year, Kubica says Williams could turn things around quickly.
"I think nobody was expecting Williams, which was midfield team, to struggle so much and I think nobody was expecting Sauber - the weakest team last year - fighting for midfield position or going into Q3.
"So you know things can change very quickly in Formula 1. I think it is unfair to put a sticker on Williams that it is the weakest team. It is true that it is the weakest team in this period, but if we say about next year, who knows?
"If you ask everybody in the paddock who wants to come to Formula 1, they will still sign for Williams. And it is not because they are desperate to drive, but its [because] everything can change.
"This team I think has potential and shown in the past that they can do a good job, that they can deliver a good car."
