Alonso fails to qualify for Indy 500

Fernando Alonso failed to qualify for next week's Indianapolis 500 after dropping into the shootout for the last row on the grid, which saw the Formula 1 star again struggle. Alonso has been making a high-profile chase of the 'Triple Crown', but must return to the Brickyard another year if he is to match Graham Hill's unique feat.

The double world champion crashed on Wednesday, which ultimately wiped out a further day of on-track action as McLaren struggled to fix his car.

After further struggles come the weekend, McLaren were moved to seek help from IndyCar's biggest names ahead of the last nine shootout, taking set-up and parts from Penske and Andretti respectively.

Alonso clocked an average speed of 227.353 mph from his four laps, slowing slightly through his efforts.

Having gone slower than opening driver James Hinchcliffe, Alonso was moved onto the bubble by Sage Karam going quickest of all on the fourth run.

Red Bull junior driver Patricio O'Ward could not dislodge Alonso, but Kyle Kaiser just snuck in ahead of the Spaniard, averaging just 0.019mph quicker for Juncos Racing, one of IndyCar's smallest teams.
