NASCAR team chief issues verdict on signing 303-race Cup Series star for 2026

NASCAR team chief issues verdict on signing 303-race Cup Series star for 2026

Jimmie Johnson smiles and waves at fans

NASCAR legend and Legacy Motor Club chief Jimmie Johnson has been quizzed on whether or not he will move to snap up Cup Series star Daniel Suarez for 2026.

Suarez is set to become a free agent at the end of the season after it was announced earlier this month that he and Trackhouse Racing would be going their separate ways when his contract expires.

It remains to be seen where the Mexican driver ends up next year, although he has stated that he is confident that he will remain in the Cup Series.

Johnson, given he owns a team in NASCAR's top series, was quizzed on a potential move for the Mexican star for next season, and he had a lot of positive things to say about the driver of the No. 99.

"First and foremost, Danny is a great friend and somebody I stay in touch with," Johnson explained.

"I kind of knew his situation from a friend standpoint for a while. Great talent. Very popular. Can really perform on any track, has great sponsorship interest.

"A well-rounded modern-day NASCAR athlete...real opportunity for any team owner."

Daniel Suarez to Legacy Motor Club?

Currently, Legacy Motor Club runs two cars in the Cup Series, with Erik Jones driving the No. 43, and John Hunter Nemechek piloting the No. 42, with plans for a third charter in the future.

However, right now, as much as Johnson admits he would love to consider Suarez an option, he does not have a seat for the 33-year-old and therefore believes the timing on this move just doesn't work.

"I would love to think about him seriously," Johnson added to his previous comments. "But I don’t have a seat."

"On top of the fact I’m not sure if and when we’ll get a seat as we’re trying to acquire our third charter.

"I would look hard at him if we were prepared and ready and moving in that direction. In this instance, I highly doubt timing is going to work out.

"I think he’s a great talent and should have plenty of options."
