Kevin Harvick has opened up on a surprise race result over the weekend, getting beaten by his 12-year-old son for the second time this year.

Keelan Harvick appears to be following in his Cup Series legend father's footsteps as a stock car driver, not only beating his father this weekend at Evergreen Speedway, but also taking another impressive result on Monday.

The younger Harvick was racing at the Cook Out Summer Shootout’s Night of Games in Charlotte, leading 22 of 25 laps from pole before a late caution restart saw him overtaken by winner London McKenzie.

Finishing lower down the field in that race were Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen – the pair of New Zealanders racing full-time in the IndyCar Series and the NASCAR Cup Series respectively, and taking every chance they can get to up their oval experience.

Harvick: I got beat by the 12-year-old

Harvick Sr. talked about the Evergreen Speedway race on his Happy Hour podcast this week, sheepishly admitting: "We didn't crash anything...I did get beat by the 12-year-old. This time he just beat me. First time, he finished ahead. This time, just start to finish, just beat me.

"It was the first time I've watched him in the car – because I got to race behind him pretty much all day – it's the first time I've watched him in the car and I was like, 'he's confident'.

"He knows how wide his car is, he's comfortable sliding the car round, his side-by-side was...they're close enough, right there. He felt comfortable driving the car in the corner. Man, we raced in front of a capacity crown, like 7,000 people."

Harvick also took time to give props to young racer Haeden Plybon, who pipped his son for the win at Evergreen.
