Alonso recovering from latest jaw surgery

Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso is currently on the mend after undergoing successful surgery to remove titanium plates from his jaw.

The plates were fitted following a pre-season cycling incident early last year in which the Alpine driver was involved in a collision with a car outside a supermarket while on a training ride in Lugano, Switzerland.

The second operation was conducted at a hospital in the Swiss city of Bern last week, leading to Alonso spending two days in the facility before being allowed to return home where he is now recuperating.

The operation meant the 40-year-old was unable to compete in the Virtual Le Mans 24-hours event at the weekend during which current F1 champion Max Verstappen crashed while leading.

Alonso, who still served as team captain for the No 36 Alpine, explained more on his current circumstances.

"I couldn't participate this time because I had an operation last week and was in the hospital for a while," said Alonso, his comments aired during the broadcast of the race. "Now I'm recovering from this operation.

"It's a great event and I wanted to take part, along with my teammate Esteban Ocon.

"We wanted to be in the same car, but because I couldn't make it because of the surgery, he must have postponed his participation until later.

"But I think we'll make up for it one day."
