Maserati open door for potential F1 return
Maserati has not ruled out a possible return to F1 once the sport's new engine rules are finalised.
The Italian manufacturer this week announced a long-overdue return to single-seater competition after a more than 60-year absence as the iconic trident marque is to take part in Formula E from next year.
Whilst Formula E represents Maserati's first step back into motorsport following such a lengthy absence, CEO Davide Grasso has not dismissed the likelihood of an F1 comeback in the future.
F1 is due to run to new power unit rules from 2025 that are currently attracting the Volkswagen Group and with it the high possibility either the Audi or Porsche brand will feature on the grid from that season.
With Maserati now owned by the powerful Stellantis organisation that was a merger between Fiat and Peugeot, Grasso has opened the door to a Maserati F1 return.
Asked about the chances of Maserati in F1 as a manufacturer for the first time since 1957 when it won the drivers' title with Juan Manuel Fangio, Grasso replied: “You mean the other championship led by my friend Stefano Domenicali? Time will tell.
"But Formula 1 is the premier class, the most important championship for racing cars, a great competition. “Maserati was there, winning the world championship with Juan Manuel Fangio. So the question is not out of place, but also not relevant at the moment.
“Formula E should be our first step.”
