Andretti labels F1 "one big family" after securing Renault engine deal
Former F1 champion Mario Andretti has described the sport as "one big family" after revealing the proposed Andretti Global team will run with Renault power units.
Michael Andretti has applied with the FIA to enter F1 from 2024 onwards as an expansion to the hugely successful Andretti Autosports outfit that takes in IndyCar, Indy Lights, Extreme E and Formula E, amongst those it is involved with.
Andretti Sr broke the news of the bid to enter F1 through his Twitter account in February and later confirmed the French manufacturer - which only supplies factory team Alpine with power units - would partner the team.
Asked by David Land, who runs a YouTube channel dedicated to motorsport, how the Renault deal came together, 1978 world champion Andretti Sr explained: "We have a lot of friends there in Formula 1, you know, it is one big family type of thing.
"Michael has obviously been talking with that group, Alpine, to field the sportscar programme and so on and so forth. There are a lot of moving parts and all of it works ultimately.
"We are reliant on a lot of good people and they tell us about all the prerequisites and we have checked every box, every box that has been put out in front of us. That is it, that is all we can do."
Andretti Jr had made a bid to take over Sauber, currently Alfa Romeo's F1 team, last year only to see the deal fall through at the 11th hour due to control issues.
