I have never been in such a good shape as I am now - Kubica

Robert Kubica has insisted he is completely ready to make a return to competitive Formula One action after seven years away as he attempts to get his career back on track after a vehicle collision which cost him part of his forearm during a rally race.

The Pole has made strides towards a comeback over the past year and took part in practice races for Williams following the final Grand Prix of the season at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.

The fairytale comeback would make for a good story for Kubica, but Sergey Sirotkin is also in contention for the role which means a return in 2018 is far from a done deal.

Whether it is with Williams or not, Kubica feels he is ready to get behind the wheel competitively again.

“The most important thing is the confidence is there and the belief I can do it is there,” Kubica told BBC Sport.

“I have never been ready 100 per cent even when I have been racing on my, let’s say, ‘gold times’.

“I have done a lot. I have proved myself a lot and there are a lot of things which give me a lot of confidence and give me positive answers but the decision is not on my side.

“The situation is not easy with my limitations, but I think honestly there were a lot of questions of mine about my limitations and fitness.

“We should agree in the end, although I have limitations, fitness-wise, I am ready – and in fact I have never been in such a good shape as I am now.”
