Second place is usually something to celebrate but Kimi Raikkonen was left "f***ing disappointed" by his podium result at the Austrian Grand Prix. The Finn lost out to Max Verstappen in an opening-lap battle that would ultimately hand the Red Bull man the win in Spielberg.

With Mercedes locking out the front row, Raikkonen got between Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas off the line and was running second before falling back into Verstappen's clutches.

As a Mercedes meltdown put Verstappen into the lead, Raikkonen was unable to close down the Dutchman, running out of laps after narrowing the gap late on.

Race engineer Carlo Santi and team principal Maurizio Arrivabene both took to the radio to congratulate Raikkonen on his performance but the veteran was less than impressed, having racked up a 104th race since his last F1 win.

"Ah... fucking disappointed," he replied. "It was good points for the team."

Raikkonen is still to gain a place by the end of an opening lap since 2016, despite a brilliant launch at the Red Bull Ring.

Having gone from P3 to P4, via second place, Raikkonen explained his inability to keep up the fight with Mercedes.

"I had to back off a little bit because they were going to squeeze together, my decision was already gone there. I was scared I was going to be hit."
