Le Mans, not Montreal, on Alonso's mind
Le Mans, not Montreal, on Alonso's mind
Fernando Alonso was in no mood to discuss Formula 1 after his last race before heading to the Le Mans 24 Hours ended in retirement at the Canadian Grand Prix. Alonso's 300th F1 entry ended in what has become all-too familiar fashion as his McLaren had to be nursed back to the pits amid exhaust issues.
Alonso looked like securing a points finish, despite qualifying 14th, but his machinery let him down on lap 42.
He will be favourite in Le mans with Toyota next week as he looks to add a second leg of the 'Triple Crown' to his collection.
Asked by Sky Sports what he wanted to discuss after the Montreal retirement, Alonso said: "Le Mans. I'm flying tonight to Le Mans.
"From tomorrow it's another experience there. Hopefully a good race for us, we are also leading the World Endurance Championship after the race in Spa.
"We are definitely focused on that right now after the retirement of today."
Reports this weekend have linked Alonso with a race seat in IndyCar next year, should McLaren decide to go full-time in the American series.
Asked if he would return to the Cnadian GP in 2019, the Spaniard said: "We'll see. I hope so.
"We definitely need to find more performance in the car.
"We need to find the way to become also competitive and reliability is also important - we saw at the beginning of the year how many points we scored.
"We lost points in the last two races, a few areas in the car we need to keep improving and let's see what will happen in the next couple of months."
