NASCAR star confirms team EXIT ahead of Pocono

Ricky Stenhouse celebrating his win at Talladega Superspeedway 2024

NASCAR star Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has confirmed a major departure from his Hyak Motorsports team ahead of this weekend’s race at Pocono.

The Cup Series team have parted ways with spotter Tab Boyd who worked on the No.47 Chevrolet, with Clayton Hughes replacing Boyd at Pocono.

Stenhouse Jr confirmed Boyd’s official exit during an interview on Friday morning with SiriusXM NASCAR and said: “That's an unfortunate deal. The team let Tab Boyd go this week, and we got Clayton Hughes to come fill in. I've never worked with Clayton."

“I think the concern for me is trying to get on the same page as quick as we can knowing that the schedule coming up. Going to Atlanta next week could be a very important race for our race team and trying to get us into the Playoffs and put us in the right position.”

Why was Boyd axed from Hyak Motorsports?

Hyak Motorsports are yet to issue an official clarification on why Boyd has been axed from the team, ending a three year relationship between the spotter and Stenhouse Jr.

Boyd also made headlines this week after he shared a post on X about last weekend’s race in Mexico City, which read: “I’m ready to go home, screw this place. People can talk it up all they want… can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched… in less than five minutes. Good area my a**.”

The post has since been deleted, but Boyd was not the only driver to make controversial comments about NASCAR’s return to Mexico, with Carson Hocevar fined by his own team Spire Motorsports.

Hocevar described Mexico City as a ‘s***hole’ and was fined $50,000 by the team, with the 20-year-old apologising in a statement on X and the money from the team going to several Mexican charities.

GPFans has contacted Hyak Motorsports for comment.
