NASCAR champion Kyle Larson makes final decision on re-attempting the 'double'

NASCAR champion Kyle Larson makes final decision on re-attempting the 'double'

2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson has offered a definitive answer on whether or not he will re-attempt the 'double'.

After the weather halted his effort in 2024, the Hendrick Motorsports star attempted the challenging feat once again this season, but once again was hit with problems.

The 'double' sees a driver attempt to complete both the Indy 500 in IndyCar and Coca Cola 600 in the NASCAR Cup Series on the very same day, with 1100 miles to be completed in total across the two races.

Unfortunately for Larson, his 2025 attempt was thwarted in the Indy 500 when a lap 92 restart saw him wreck of his own accord after losing control of the No. 17 car. Larson did make to to Charlotte for the NASCAR race, but his Coca Cola 600 also ended with an early wreck, marking a rough day for the driver.

Perhaps due to that experience, Larson now says that he won't attempt the double again, revealing one aspect of it that is just too tough.

"I feel like I’ve made it known that I wouldn’t do the Double again,” Larson told the media ahead of this weekend's race at Atlanta.

“I get asked about it all the time. It’s just logistically too tough.”

Kyle Larson open to Indy 500 run

Taking part in both events requires a huge amount of preparation and time, as well as being incredibly challenging logistically due to the tight turnaround between race times.

For example, when this year's Indy 500 was delayed due to weather, Larson had just a 45-minute buffer before he would have had to decide not to take part and instead head to Charlotte for the NASCAR race.

However, whilst the door has firmly been shut on running the 'double' once again, Larson has admitted that he is open to just competing in the Indy 500 again.

“I just don’t really think it’s [the double] worth it, but I would love to run the Indy 500 again," Larson said last month.

"Just doing the double, I think, is just logistically too tough.”
