NASCAR insider clarifies points punishment for driver

A NASCAR insider has revealed why Austin Hill escaped an immediate points deduction in this week's penalty report.

Hill sparked controversy at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday night after an incident that saw him intentionally wreck Aric Almirola in an act of revenge.

NASCAR handed Hill an immediate five-lap penalty for reckless driving during the event, but confirmed post-race that they would be reviewing the footage in order to determine whether or not any further punishment was necessary.

And, after reviewing said footage, they deemed it was, with Hill being issued a one-race suspension by NASCAR officials on Tuesday that will see him miss this weekend's race at Iowa.

Playoff implications for Austin Hill

Hill will now require a waiver if he wants to compete in the Xfinity Series playoffs this season because he will be absent from a regular-season race.

However, in NASCAR's penalty report, no specific points deduction was mentioned, with some fans on social media confused as to why not.

Clarifying the situation, FOX Sports' Bob Pockrass has now explained that despite no specific points penalty, Hill will lose all of his playoff points regardless.

"Hill will lose all his regular-season playoff points because that is a condition of the waiver for missing a race for a non-medical reason," Pockrass responded to a fan on X.

Prior to his suspension, Hill was locked into the Xfinity Series playoffs with three wins so far in 2025 and 21 playoff points in the bank.

However, as Pockrass revealed, Hill will now lose all of those points, and any that he gains in the remaining five races of the regular season.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs are set to kick off at Bristol Motor Speedway on September 12.
