NASCAR star's race RUINED in Cup Series' weirdest incident yet

NASCAR Cup Series star Katherine Legge has revealed the reason for her difficult race in Mexico last weekend, in what could be the sport's weirdest incident yet.

The British driver made her Cup Series debut earlier this year at Phoenix where she unfortunately failed to finish the race, and hoped to make amends upon her return in Mexico City.

Legge's return looked to be an improvement on her debut, and was outside the top-20 in the running order when she was struck by an extremely unusual issue with her car.

According to her onboard team radio, Legge complained that her pedal was ‘literally, welded onto her foot’, leaving her foot stuck as she raced around the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Legge’s crew suspected that the heat from the engine of the car caused the rubber sole of her shoe to melt onto the pedal, but somehow the 44-year-old continued driving and finished P32, ruining what could have been a much better result in Mexico.

Legge’s pedal joins NASCAR’s strangest incidents

The great and the good in NASCAR history have all been blighted by some strange incidents out on track, with legend Dale Earnhardt Jr accidentally ripping his entire wheel off the shaft at Talladega in 2016.

Elsewhere in years gone by, a lit cigarette at Kansas Speedway caused a huge plume of smoke to consume the track in 2013, with the drivers forced to drive into the cloud at the tri-oval.

Perhaps the most iconic mishap of them all took place during a NASCAR Xfinity Series race weekend in 2004 at Chicagoland Speedway, where a giant inflatable orange broke loose and decided to join in with qualifying.

The 20ft orange abruptly paused the session as those trackside tried to bring the mammoth inflatable under control, but despite its heft and size it continued to roll delicately and determined to complete a lap.

Finally, the track invading fruit was apprehended and brought to swift justice, not before it had seared itself on the memories of NASCAR fans forever.
