Team Penske star issues thankful statement after escaping from violent wreck

Josef Newgarden, Team Penske, IndyCar, 2024

Team Penske star Josef Newgarden has thanked safety officials after escaping from a violent wreck unscathed.

Newgarden was involved in a horrific incident at Gateway on lap 131 of Sunday's IndyCar race, with his car colliding with Louis Foster's No. 45, subsequently taking to the air and slamming back onto the ground upside down.

It didn't stop there, though, with Newgarden's car continuing to slide and skid across the track before coming to a halt, with the aeroscreen really showing its worth in terms of safety as sparks flew inside the cockpit.

Fortunately, IndyCar's AMR safety team were on the scene immediately, and it was later confirmed by the series that Newgarden had been seen and released by their medical staff.

Following the race, Newgarden has taken to his social media to issue a statement on what happened on Sunday night.

The Team Penske star admitted he was somewhat lost for words, but showed gratitude to IndyCar's safety officials and the safety of the car itself.

"Not sure what to say, other than thank you to the AMR safety team and the safety of the car," Newgarden wrote on Instagram.

"Seemed like everything was going our way last night, until it wasn’t. Not much you can do in a situation like that.

"This season has been pretty trying for everyone on the 2 crew. Only thing to do is look forward. It will only make the successes even sweeter.

"See you in Road America!"
