NASCAR star reveals controversial rival blanked call and text over wreck

NASCAR Cup Series driver Josh Berry has revealed that Carson Hocevar didn't pick up his call or answer a text apologising for wrecking him at Sonoma.

Hocevar has already become infamous in his short career for his aggressive, bordering on reckless, driving style. However on this occasion, Berry made no bones about whose fault the wreck was and admitted a 'complete mistake'.

Berry got into a couple of skirmishes on track at the road course just over a week ago and took some time to explain them this weekend, abdicating responsibility for the first but holding his hands up for knocking Hocevar out of contention.

However, the 2024 Rookie of the Year showed no interest in having a conversation over Berry's mea culpa, leaving him instead to talk to crew chief Luke Lambert the day after the race.

Hocevar: I don't like Monday apologies

The CARS Tour legend said: “The No. 43 was a restart at turn seven. Obviously, we’re all jammed up into each other,. The No. 4 car was on my right and kind of clipped me, and we just all got bottle-necked up and he got turned around.

"The No. 77 was a complete mistake on my part. I laid off at the bottom of one. I was trying to time it to where I could get up beside Carson and follow the No. 45 through and was just too fast to the top of the hill, got too far left and ran into Carson and knocked him off the track.

"It’s unfortunate. Obviously, I hate it for those guys. I tried calling Carson on Monday and sent him a text, but never heard anything back. I did talk to [Lambert] on Monday morning to apologize to those guys and it’s just part of racing. We were on old tires and, for me, probably just trying a little too hard in that situation.”

Hocevar did respond in part to the news that Berry had tried to contact him, telling reporters at Dover this weekend: "It’s just racing. Sometimes stuff happens. We’re all in the limit of everything. Of all people, I’m on the limit of everything. So, yeah, it doesn’t bother me.

"I don’t really like the whole ‘have to call’ and do that and have to apologize on Monday, say whatever. Because, I mean, even if you do it intentionally or not, you’re never going to say that to the person."
