Kyle Busch's NASCAR team owner sends 'trouble' message as winless streak extends

Kyle Busch’s NASCAR team chief Richard Childress admitted the team were ‘in trouble’ after a disappointing performance at Dover last weekend.

The 40-year-old was denied a fourth career victory at the Dover International Speedway last weekend, after his No. 8 Chevrolet car was unable to challenge for a race win and finished Sunday’s race in 11th.

Even P11 was difficult for Busch, who had to fight through traffic to claim the position in the first place, and the result led to the team’s owner criticising their performance on the cool down lap.

"Gotta get some race cars. We are in trouble. Period,” Childress could be heard saying over the team radio.

Does Busch still have a playoff chance?

Busch and RCR’s poor result at Dover prompted the Cup Series champion to tumble down to P18 in the standings, where he is now 39 points shy of the playoff cut line with five races remaining.

RCR’s second driver, Austin Dillon, fared even worse and languished further down in 15th, with the team’s disappointing result unsurprisingly drawing criticism from Childress.

Busch issued a more measured response to their result at Dover, and after the race said: “We just needed more at the end of the race. We were pretty neutral to start. By Stage 2, it was easy for the right rear to push through the right front when rubber built.

“Our balance switched to wrecking loose, and our Chevy wasn’t in the track. It was way different from the start of the race. We salvaged what we could. We’ll regroup and continue to push for a spot in the NASCAR Playoffs."

After Dover, Busch's winless streak in the Cup Series has extended to 78 races.
