NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick goes in on 23XI driver's 'complete disaster' in Chicago

NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick goes in on 23XI driver's 'complete disaster' in Chicago

NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick has called Corey Heim's weekend in Chicago a 'complete disaster' in a brutally honest post-race verdict.

Heim, who races full-time in the Truck Series, is a development driver with 23XI Racing, and has stepped up to race for the team in the No. 67 on multiple occasions this season.

At Kansas, for example, Heim finished 13th, whilst at Nashville he was classified as 37th after an early wreck in the race.

The 23-year-old stepped up to drive the No. 67 once again in Chicago, but disappointingly, Heim found himself making an error in qualifying on Saturday, crashing into a wall around the streets of Windy City and suffering from a broken toe link as a result.

With 41 drivers competing in Chicago, including five open entries, one driver had to miss out on the race, and Heim set the slowest time of the open cars, meaning he was the driver not to qualify.

Taking to social media, Heim accepted responsibility for the incident: "Made a mistake on my first lap and bent the toe link. Tried to get everything I could out of it after that but clearly wasn’t enough. That’s completely my fault and still trying to process all of it. Thank you 23XI Racing for a car plenty capable enough to make the race."

Kevin Harvick issues Corey Heim verdict

Assessing Heim's performance in Chicago on his Happy Hour show, Harvick did not hold back in his verdict, labeling it a disastrous weekend for the 23-year-old.

“I look at it as a complete disaster for the #67 car and Corey Heim,” Harvick reflected.

“And I think that’s the coaching that goes into these types of situations in these moments on these street courses, especially in his position. Don’t wreck. You have to beat one car.

"We want you to go fast in the race, but we have to first be in the race."

Harvick continued, backing Heim, who he called mentally tough, to learn from his tough weekend and come back stronger.

“That’s a tough teaching moment,” Harvick added.

“But I think a guy like Corey Heim, that is mentally tough like he is, you think that that’ll be a learning moment that he will never forget.

"The disaster comes from the part of not being able to get all the laps in the race. ... But I think that that 90% rule is in effect when you’re in that position in practice and qualifying.”
