Long-time RFK Racing president Steve Newmark has announced that he will leave the NASCAR Cup Series team for a new opportunity.

After 15 years with the team, Newmark announced that he will be leaving later this summer to take up a position in the University of North Carolina's athletics program.

Newmark will be the Tar Heels' new Executive Associate Athletic Director, joining NFL legend Bill Belichick at the college as the six-time Super Bowl winning head coach gears up for his first NCAA campaign.

RFK are running three cars in the Cup Series this year for the first time since 2016, with co-owner Brad Keselowski in the No. 6 car, Chris Buescher in the No. 17, and Ryan Preece in the No. 60.

Newmark: True privilege to work with RFK owners

In a statement announcing his departure, he wrote: "I've been incredibly fortunate to work alongside so many amazing people at RFK Racing over the past 15 years.

"It has been a true privilege to learn from - and represent - Jack Roush and John Henry, and the entire Roush and Fenway organizations. And I firmly believe the RFK team is in a great spot and poised for tremendous success both on and off the track in the years ahead.

"Now, it's time for a new chapter. I am heading back home to Chapel Hill to join one of the most respected and successful programs in college sports.

"I am thrilled to officially become part of UNC Athletics and look forward to joining Tar Heel Nation as we strive for wins and championships across all sports in the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics."
