Chase Elliott’s recent form has been criticised by former NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Petty, despite the 29-year-old’s current spot in the standings.

Speaking in a video posted to the NASCAR website, Petty praised Chase Briscoe who stepped up to the internal pressure within his own team by winning at Pocono last weekend, whilst questioning Elliott's current form and whether he has responded in the same way at Hendrick Motorsports.

Chase Briscoe felt the pressure to win for Joe Gibbs Racing and he stepped up and got it done,” he said.

“Now, remember, Hamlin had already won three times, and Bell had already won three times. That internal competition makes you better and it made Chase Briscoe better. So, what's going on with Chase Elliott?”

“I mean, if we say internal competition, Larson's won three Byron's won one…is Chase [Elliott] stepping up?”

“Since 2023 Chase Elliott has won only one race. One race people. I know you've got all the t-shirts, I know you've got all the hats. I know he's Mr. Most popular, but how can our most popular driver not win races and not even be the best driver in the team he drives for?”

Does Elliott’s lack of Cup Series wins in 2025 matter?

Elliott has failed to win a race since Texas last year, but regardless he remains fifth in the standings and in contention to secure a spot in the playoffs should he continue to deliver consistent performances.

The 29-year-old has secured nine finishes in the top 10 this year and is 199 points above the cut line, but for Petty this still isn’t good enough, and he continued to compare him to Briscoe.

“I know he's got a championship and he's won a bunch of races. There was a movie one time called As Good As It Gets, is this as good as it gets and have we already seen the best of Chase Elliott?” Petty continued.

“My point is this, we have one ascending Chase, Chase Briscoe, and we have one Chase [Elliott] that's just kind of here. And is that good enough?

“Is that good enough for our expectations, for the fans expectations? Is that good enough for the Hendrick organization? Is that good enough for the sponsors?

“If it is, more power to you, but in a sport where we reward wins and we reward championships, we need somebody to step up.

“Chase has got to step up, and if we're complacent and we're satisfied with as good as it gets, so be it, I'm not.”

Of course, consistency will not be enough when it comes to the playoffs - should Elliott make it there - with the likes of Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell all achieving three wins in 2025 thus far.
