NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon issues verdict on Kyle Larson failure

Four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon has commended his driver's attempt at claiming 'The Double' of American motorsport.

Hendrick Motorsports star Kyle Larson tried to win the Indy500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, but crashed out of both events, leaving many to question whether he was taking on a little too much.

It is the second time that the 2021 Cup Series champion has attempted the double, but he has failed both times, and this latest result in NASCAR at least has potentially hampered his chances of becoming NASCAR Regular Season champion.

However, Hendrick Motorsport's vice-chairman Gordon does not seem to mind his driver having the ambition to try and race in both races on the same day, calling Larson's attempt 'amazing'.

"I think it's an amazing challenge," he told Road & Track. "There's probably a thirty-to-forty-minute window of time you have to actually pull it off. You have to have everything go right.

"And unfortunately, for Kyle Larson and our efforts the last two years, you know, we haven't had everything go right, but I'm glad we tried it."

Larson falling behind in standings

While the race-ending collision in the Coca-Cola 600 has potentially put Larson's regular season championship bid in jeopardy, the 32-year-old is still in the hunt for the biggest prize of them all.

With three wins and nine top-five finishes in 2025, Larson is surely going to be in contention come the Championship Race in November, alongside team-mate William Byron.

Gordon spoke about the exciting Hendrick Motorsports driver line-up which consists of Larson, Byron, Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman, with the 53-year-old NASCAR legend saying: "Start with the Daytona 500 win. We've had a few wins, and like to get Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman in the victory lane - lock him in the playoffs.

"But all of them have been the top 10 in points pretty much all year long. And for us, you're only as good as your last race - and no matter what happened last week, you always want to be better the next week."
