Vettel unnerved by "dangerous" marshal incident at Imola

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was forced to warn the FIA about a dangerous situation involving a group of marshals clearing the track in the aftermath of Geroge Russell's incident behind the safety car.

Russell pitched his Williams into the wall on the exit of Piratella, a blind left-hander that drops over a crest heading towards another blind apex at Acque Minerali.

As the FIA released six cars to unlap themselves behind the safety car, initially caused by Max Verstappen's high-speed tyre failure, circuit marshals were left in a perilous position as Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi, Nicholas Latifi and Romain Grosjean passed with extreme caution.

Even though double-waved yellow flags were being shown, Grosjean, a director of the GPDA [Grand Prix Drivers' Association], said on team radio: "Okay, it is a bit dangerous to leave the marshals on [the track]."

That view was echoed by Vettel, who, after being told of who his on-track rivals were after pit stops, responded: "Tell them to watch out, the marshals are on the track. It is very, very dangerous. Tell the marshals to get out of the track."

Whilst the first five to arrive on the scene proceeded tentatively, Lance Stroll arrived at the complex without abating his speed creating an unnerving visual, contrasting the sport's continued effort to increase circuit safety.

GPFans has contacted the FIA for a response.
