Russell out to rectify "biggest mistake of my career" at Imola

George Russell has stated his ambition to rectify "the biggest mistake" of his Formula 1 career at Imola this weekend.

At last year's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Russell was on the verge of scoring his first F1 points when he lost control of his Williams behind the safety car and made contact with the concrete walls that line segments of the circuit.

The Briton eventually broke his points duck in his 37th race when standing in for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes at the Sakhir Grand Prix but is yet to register a point for Williams.

"I made what is probably the biggest mistake of my career at Imola in 2020 when crashing under the safety car," he said.

"It’s a track where, if you make a mistake, you’re out. But that’s what racing should be about!

"I’ll look to try and rectify my mistake from last year with a good result this weekend."

Imola was not expected to feature on the 2021 calendar but was added after the continuing Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the postponement of the Chinese Grand Prix.

Despite his unfortunate first experience of Imola in F1 machinery, Russell was excited to once again tackle the historic venue.

He added: "Imola is a fantastic circuit; it’s very fast and you really need to be committed. It also has a lot of character that the newer tracks sometimes lack, and you feel that when you’re bouncing over the kerbs.

"I’m very happy that the track is back on the calendar this season."
