Schumacher "90 per cent" happy with Haas F1 debut

Mick Schumacher has blamed his early Bahrain Grand Prix spin for missing out on declaring himself 100 per cent happy with his Haas debut.

Unlike rookie team-mate Nikita Mazepin who endured a wretched weekend that included multiple spins and an exit from the race after just three corners, Schumacher quietly went about his business as he put in the laps and made very few errors.

The one blemish came on lap four following a safety car restart when the German spun his VF-21 when stamping on the throttle marginally too early.

Evaluating his performance, Schumacher said: “I think, in general, let’s say 90 per cent happy, 10 per cent not because of the mistake that I did in the safety car restart with the spin.

"But luckily the car was still driveable and everything was still all right so I could keep going and keep taking my experience through the race weekend."

Rather than panic, Schumacher claimed he was immediately focused on the issue at hand.

“I was actually trying to understand why it happened and quite quickly understood it so that was good," added Schumacher.

"Afterwards, obviously, it was a bit of a shame that I wasn’t in the pack being able to try at least to be closer to the guys for a few laps.

“But fortunately I got through with blue flags and also catching up to Nicholas [Latifi]. I was able to get a feel for how it is to follow a car closely and with DRS and everything.

“I felt like I have learned a lot and I am able to convert that hopefully into something positive for the next race.”
