Formula 1 return is about people's livelihoods, insists Ross Brawn

Formula 1 managing director of motorsports, Ross Brawn, says that there are many reasons for wanting to start the season - not just money.

There have been more than a few eyebrows raised by the potential of grand prix racing returning while most of Europe remains in lockdown and, while again relaying his desire to get things moving, Brawn insisted that this can only happen when it is safe to do so.

“[There are] many reasons for wanting to start the season,” Brawn told the official F1 Nation podcast.

“One is obviously to excite the fans, who have all been frustrated by the delays. We’ve got a very exciting season in front of us. But it’s a very important livelihood for thousands of people, it’s another reason for trying to kick-start the season...

“I’m sure [the drivers] miss it and they will support these moves we’re making with the understanding it is done properly, there will be no risk taken and it will all be done in the correct way.”

In recent days, Liberty Media have stated their intent that the season begin in Austria on July 5, potentially with two races being held on consecutive weekends.

A double header at Silverstone would follow with the Hungarian Grand Prix one week later.

However, what the situation surrounding a lockdown in both Austria and the United Kingdom will be in a months time remains unclear, but in Hungary, holding the race would require the authorities to make an exception to a ban on gatherings of 500 or more people.

Brawn added, "We’re working our way through all the requirements to make sure we operate in a safe environment for everyone involved in the race."
