Hat-trick of second place finishes for Verstappen on Supercars debut
Hat-trick of second place finishes for Verstappen on Supercars debut
Max Verstappen is competing as a wildcard driver in the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries.
With two races taking place on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit and a further two on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the second at Silverstone being a reverse grid race, chaos is almost guaranteed.
Silverstone Verstappen started in sixth for the first race at Silverstone but quickly climbed to fourth within the first few corners but the Dutchman wasn't done there, passing Supercars champions Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin as the pair ran wide at Stowe on lap one.
Penrite Racing driver Anton de Pasquale took the victory racing in his Holden ZB Commodore, but a reverse grid second race meant that things would be even more exciting in race two.
Starting second last for the longer reverse grid race at Silverstone, Verstappen was given a proper Supercars greeting. Involved in several moment of heavy contact, Verstappen was forced into an early pit stop
Cam Waters won the nine lap race in his Monster Energy Ford Falcon while de Pasquale and Shane van Gisbergen managed to back up their strong race one performances to register third and fourth.
Verstappen's early race exploits limited him to 18th position.
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Once again starting sixth, Verstappen made the most of another chaotic race start to come home in second position. De Pasquale made it three consecutive podiums for the day with third place, as the lead drivers were able to pull away from the field.
Van Gisbergen took the win for the Red Bull Holden Racing Team, with Verstappen completing the Red Bull one-two.
Starting fifth for the final race, Verstappen again survived the early carnage to jump into second, again behind van Gisbergen. Failing to close the gap on the 2016 Supercars champion, Verstappen made an early trip into the pits in order to execute an undercut on van Gisbergen, a tactic that paid off, the Dutchman jumping his rival in the stops.
However, the advantage would not last and van Gisbergen was able to regain the lead using a combination of fresher tyres and the slipstream down the main straight.
Aside from his incident filled second race at Silverstone, Verstappen was the most consistent driver of the day, finishing second on three occasions.
