Daniel Ricciardo 2019 ratings Part 2
French GP (Qual: 8th - Race: 11th) 7/10
Dropped from seventh to outside the points for leaving the track to pass Lando Norris and Kimi Raikkonen on the last lap, but Ricciardo going for it all is exactly why F1 fans love him so much. The slight controversy perhaps masked another fine outing for the Australian, who seems to be getting on top of his new surroundings impressively and is giving Red Bull replacement Gasly terrors.
Austrian GP (Qual: 14th - Race: 12th) 5/10
Ricciardo started on the fringes of the points, but lost positions at the start and then embarked on a mammoth 46-lap stint on soft tyres which only did as much as to put him back where he started.
British GP (Qual: 7th - Race: 7th) 6/10
Like team-mate Hulkenberg, Ricciardo ended where he started, but that didn't tell much of the story. After losing out to Norris and then getting back ahead, Ricciardo would have been on for sixth if not for the safety car falling perfectly for Norris' team-mate.
German GP (Qual: 13th - Race: DNF) 4/10
Eliminated in Q2 by a few hundredths of a second, by his team-mate among others. Also denied the chance to show his fighting qualities by an early engine blowout, which will likely have penalty consequences further down the line.
Hungarian GP (Qual: 18th - Race: 14th) 4/10
Ricciardo qualified on the penultimate row, dropped to last place on the grid after taking a new power unit and saw attempts at a monstrously long opening stint only advance him as far as 14th. With Red Bull having been in the mix at four straight races, the Australian will be looking hard at 2021, as Renault appear to be going backwards.
Belgian GP (Qual: 6th - Race: 14th) 5/10
Dropped to 10th on the starting grid, but was confident of making up places, only for contact with Lance Stroll on lap one to ruin his efforts. The Australian pitted immediately and tried to make it to the end, but there was no chance of the tyres lasting that long.
Italian GP (Qual: 5th - Race: 4th) 7/10
Ricciardo also matched his best result at Monza and was quick to praise the work done by Renault's engine department in Viry. He was just a bit of contact up front away from taking a podium, but he still contributed to Renault's best points haul from a single grand prix since Japan 2008. Having closed to within 18 points of McLaren, the battle for fourth in the constructors' standings may be on.
