Gasly forced to start Azerbaijan GP from pit lane

Pierre Gasly must start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the pit lane after he failed to report to the weigh bridge at the end of Friday's second practice session. After being called to be weighed, Gasly instead continued through the pit lane and took a service from his team.

Gasly appeared not to notice a display at the pit-lane entry which bore his racing number and GAS - signifying that he had been called to the weighbridge.

A report from the stewards made no mention of Gasly explaining why he had not stopped, leaving him helpless against picking up the punishment, which is mandatory for such an offence.

Gasly was once again off the pace of team-mate Max Verstappen in FP2 in Baku, running ninth-fastest while the Dutchman split the Mercedes cars in fourth.

The Frenchman has only scored points in China so far and has qualified on average more than a second down on Verstappen.

Red Bull are able to appeal the decision.
