F1 needs to follow example of MotoGP, claims Marko

Red Bull supremo Helmut Marko has claimed that he and his team are still worried about Liberty Media's regulatory guidelines for the 2021 season, and added that the sport should be looking to MotoGP for a guide to how to make the races exciting and competitive.

The new era of Liberty Media begins properly in 2021 once the current agreement between the teams and FIA ends, and the owners have been deep in discussions with the teams about sweeping changes that can help grow the global brand of the sport, as well as making the races themselves more thrilling.

Ferrari and Mercedes have already expressed their reservations over what has already been proposed, and added that more discussions are necessary in order to ensure the sport thrives.

Red Bull are the latest to issue a warning, with Marko claiming that MotoGP are doing things better and that F1 should learn some lessons from that discipline.

He said to German publication Bild: "I think they [Liberty] and Ross Brawn want to please everyone. It won't work. Take MotoGP. It's not a body that decides, but a man. The result is that six to eight riders can win there. That's the direction we should go in.

"For our future in formula one, the new rules must finally be on the table. The rules must be such that any one manufacturer can no longer dominate."

Marko went further to press Liberty on releasing the provisional regulations for 2021 so that teams can prepare, and that they have been stalling for too long.

He added: "We are a little worried. At the beginning of April they said we would know in four weeks what the regulations are for 2021. Then they said 'end of May'. Now it's the end of June. So far we only have statements.

"It's high time we got concrete data and rules."
