Alonso 'wants to see what F1 will become' before deciding future

Fernando Alonso has looked to the future following his Le Mans victory on Sunday which allowed him to complete two thirds of racing's Triple Crown, and has said that he wants to see what the future of F1 could look like before making a decision.

Alonso's win meant that he just needs victory in the Indy 500 in order to complete the coveted Triple Crown which also includes Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix.

MORE: Alonso wins Le Mans

Formula 1 commitments have in the past prohibited him from dedicating his time completely in his bid for all three, but speaking after his win in France the Spaniard said that he wants to assess F1's development over the next few months before making a call.

He said: "I will make my mind up after the summer what I will do next year, but after winning Le Mans, Indy comes into play with a high priority. Let's see if it is next year or the following year. Let's see what the future of F1 will be.

"I attempted the Indy 500 last year with that intention and we were leading the race and close to winning but we missed the opportunity. Here we were leading the race and I was worried about missing the opportunity again but here we achieved it. It is definitely a very attractive target to try for the triple crown and see if I can be a better driver, a more complete driver.

Alonso has appeared to be a driver not enjoying himself in Formula 1 in recent years, with his McLaren regularly well off the pace as well as suffering from reliability issues in the last two Grands Prix in Monaco and Canada.

He added that the role of the team ultimately decides where you finish a Formula 1 race, a fact that frustrates and means, he feels, he can't improve as a driver.

"Being in Formula One you just follow your team performance and if your team is first you will be first or second and if your team is third you with be fifth or sixth. To be a better driver, a more complete driver, you need to win in every series against the specialists of those series.

"To beat the specialists in oval racing or here in endurance the guys as they know every little trick here so to be able to come here and be at that level is great. It makes it is a very attractive target."

McLaren chief Zak Brown has said previously that it is likely that discussions will commence with Alonso after the mid-season break, where the Spaniard will be pushed for an answer as to whether he wants to compete in Formula 1 next year.
