Is this McLaren the future of F1?

McLaren have lifted the lid on a 2018-spec concept car that could offer a few clues as to where the future of Formula 1 lies. The McLaren X2 continues on from their 2015 concept, titled MP4-X, with the team claiming that the halo cockpit protection device has prompted their redesign.

McLaren have given their 2015 concept a lick of paint to 2018-standard papaya, as well as discussing potential technological advances that could shape the future of F1.

"Inductive coupling" - running cars on electrified tracks - is suggested to make racing more sustainable, as well as improved energy stores, which could even include solar power harvesting.

Futuristic bodywork, which would move and adapt to different sections of track could make cars equally as effective in straight lines and through corners, with extra monitoring of the car's parts allowing greater understanding in accidents.

As F1 chiefs plot a new course for 2021 that includes "cheaper, simpler" parts, it is unlikely that many of the ideas will come to fruition in the near future, but the pictures make for pretty viewing!
