Ricciardo knows how to fix 'predictable' qualifying

Daniel Ricciardo reckons that the current "predictable" nature of Formula One qualifying can be saved by Pirelli, who could introduce hypersoft tyres to every Grand Prix weekend to stop the dominance of Mercedes and Ferrari when trying to claim pole, with this duo claiming P1 in every race so far in 2018.

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel are the only two drivers to have won pole position so far, and Ricciardo believes that this is making qualifying far too "predictable" to the viewing public.

The Red Bull driver's solution is to introduce hypersoft tyres to every race and not just selected weekends.

"I don't understand why we can't have the hypersofts at every race. Or at least in qualifying," Ricciardo told Globo.

"I think if we did that it would create more options and surprises, because right now it's a little predictable."

Ricciardo used the qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix as an example of a highly-predictable outing, with the teams using the slower tyre to, in theory, set up a race in which one stop would be required. This is in contrast to the situation in the Grand Prix race proper, with multiple stops being utilised.

"[We need] a qualifying tyre that is very different from the race tyre," he continued

"It was already obvious on [last] Friday that the top six would use the soft in qualifying and then try to stop once with the medium. It was no secret."

The hypersoft tyres will be making their first appearance of the season this weekend in Monaco.
