'Sustainability is critically important for everyone' says Brown
Zak Brown says the Formula 1 need to be more vocal about their achievements in sustainability as focus continues to be drawn on the environmental effect of motorsport.
Formula One has set the target of being carbon neutral by 2030, and while Mercedes have set their own personal target of achieving this status by the end of 2020, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown says that his team have been carbon neutral for the best part of a decade.
"I think sustainability is critically important for everyone, regardless of what industry you're in, and I think it's a journey that is never going to end," said Brown. "We were the first team to win an award from the FIA in 2011. We've been carbon neutral ever since.
"Our beautiful facility here, everything has a purpose in mind for sustainability, and I do think the sport, if you look at things like our engines and our hybrid, the thermal efficiency is unbelievable, and we haven't done a good enough job in talking about that."
While Formula E is praised for promoting a message of clean energy and sustainability, Brown maintains that Formula One is doing more than they get credit for.
"I think we're doing a better job than we get credit for," continued Brown. "That being said, I think there are a lot of areas in which we can still improve.
"We, as McLaren, are going to play our part and the of course, we will do anything we can to help Formula One reach their goals. I think it is very, very important."
