Alonso wants a chance to probe Hamilton 'weak points'
Fernando Alonso is widely regarded as one of the best ever drivers to compete in Formula One with many calling for his return sooner rather than later, and the Spaniard admits that he would relish the chance to battle with Lewis Hamilton again.
Alonso stepped away from Formula One at the end of 2018 after enduring a difficult four year stint at McLaren. Spreading his wings into other forms of motorsport, Alonso has since become a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a World Endurance Championship champion and has also entered the Indianapolis 500 twice, the first of these while still in F1, and the Dakar Rally.
The Spaniard, now having cut all ties with McLaren, is a free agent and is looking at the new 2021 regulations as an opportunity to fight Hamilton on a level playing field again.
"If you study Lewis' season, there is always a common trend," Alonso said. He starts the year slowly and no-one takes the benefit of that. We all get excited that it will be the year of Bottas, but it's not.
"It would be nice to compete against him in a proper fight. Maybe his weak points are not real and everything is calculated but it would be nice to discover.
"When you have a good package and the other guys crash and you extend your championship lead, everything seems calm.
"If you are only one point behind or 10 points behind, the stress is different. The mistakes are different and your radio communications are different. We need to see him when the pressure is on."
With opportunities at the top teams limited due to drivers having already been locked in for 2021 drives, any potential return may have to be in a team currently running in the midfield.
