Brawn shrugs off copycat fears: F1 cars already look alike!
Ross Brawn has shrugged off criticism that a move towards more standardised parts in Formula 1's 2021 regulations will make the cars look identical, claiming that current cars can only be picked out by an "extreme geek" once liveries are removed.
F1 revealed further details of the new cars this week, including a return of 'ground effect' aerodynamics, which it is hoped will give cars a 90% better chance of following each other, and overtaking.
Brawn has confirmed that F1 will attempt to limit the development of teams outside of the proposed budget cap, although this has led to fears that cars will look too alike, outside of their liveries.
But Brawn says this is already the case.
"There are complaints that all the cars are going to look the same and the other nonsense we have heard, so as an exercise, Pat [Symonds] took all the existing cars and took the livery off them and put them up [on a wall].
"You cannot tell the difference between the cars we have now once the colours are taken off them. You need to be an extreme geek to pick them out, and even within our office we managed to pick three out!
"So when you see the existing cars with the colours taken off, you wouldn't know."
